I am beginning this week with a spring in my step, and a renewed passion for reflexology, having taken part in a wonderful course over the weekend!
The course was in ART (Advanced Reflexology Technique) which was founded by Tony Porter who decided to start training reflexologists 15 years ago as he believed that reflexology was becoming more and more "spa-like" and just like a "foot massage" so people weren't able to realise its full potential. He explains that an absence of a painful reflex does not necessarily denote good health, and equally that pain in a reflex does not necessarily mean something is wrong. It is the "disturbances" in the texture of certain reflex areas that can mean something- and that is what we, as reflexologists, are looking for! It was so interesting to learn about Tony's approach to reflexology, and I even got to do lots of swaps on the course, so had a lot of treatment myself which was great. I would recommend the course to any reflexologists.

September has started, the sun is still shining and schools are back- making London feel busy again! Make sure you are keeping calm in the renewed sense of stress in the atmosphere. I have a busy September, with 2 courses coming up. The first is this weekend, and is training with Tony Porter, who has developed "ART" (Advanced Reflexology Technique.) The next course is in a couple of weeks time, and learning more about meridians and Chi. I love doing these courses and always feel like I have a refreshed passion for reflexology following them. I can't wait to share with you what I have learnt, and to bring something new to my treatments! Watch this space! Reflexology is a great non-evasive therapy that can be had throughout pregnancy (I treat from week 14 onwards), right up to the point where the mother may go into labour. Although there is no evidence that reflexology can induce labour, it can help to support the body to prepare for labour and promote relaxation when anxiety levels are often high.
In the second and third trimester, reflexology can be used to help with any issues that may occur. It can help the body to relax and ease any aches and pains. If it is "labour inducing" you are after through your maternity reflexology journey, then the best time to start having treatments is around 33/34 weeks. It is good to have at least 2 treatments before your due date to allow your body to get over the "healing crisis" so that you will feel tip top when it comes to giving birth! The healing crisis is our bodies way of flushing out toxins after a treatment- sometimes this process can make us feel a bit groggy and run down, which can all be helped by drinking plenty of water. After these two treatments, the labour inducing techniques can be introduced. These techniques are quite firm and sometimes can be a little bit uncomfortable- but can all help towards getting the baby out naturally. There are some very good videos on YouTube which you and your partner can do at home to help encourage a natural labour: Labour Induction Pressure points on the back Labour Induction pressure points on the upper back and hand Labour Induction pressure points on leg and foot These techniques should be applied from week 37 onwards. Reflexology & Wellbeing
Reflexology is essential in improving wellbeing, and as a reflexologist, I see myself as a "Wellbeing Improver"! Reflexology can have an effect on how a person feels about themselves, and how they perceive their illness or problems- which in turn makes it easier for people to cope with that illness. How we achieve wellbeing and what we can do to enhance it, is completely up to us- an independent choice. Complementary therapies can help us on the path to bring about harmony, making some parts of life easier to cope with, and helping us to cope with every day stresses. I do a few things to help improve my wellbeing. I practice yoga, take regular exercise, eat healthily, spend time with friends and family, and try to have at least one treatment a month. Whole30 I am coming to the end of my 30 day detox, and although initially I thought I would find it impossible to complete, I have managed it. I have really enjoyed doing it, and have managed to be so creative with cooking up some delicious meals- have a look at myInstagram page to see some of the creations! My energy levels are balanced, I am sleeping very well and I am feeling great. I would recommend it to anyone. If you want to know more about the 30 day programme, follow this link: http://whole30.com/ Summer Offers! For the rest of the month I am doing an offer on the Natural Facelift Massage treatment. Book a 45 minute Natural Facelift Massage and only pay £30! (Price normally £40) The offer will end on 31st May, so book now. We are over halfway into April and have had some glimpses of Spring. The arrival of Spring, brings dread for some people, as they are prone to allergies. 16 million people in Britain suffer from hay fever. Reflexology can help to bring ease to the symptoms that come with allergies. By working on pressure points for sinuses, head, chest, lungs, and lymphatic system, symptoms can feel better. Some people actually report feeling like their sinuses are being cleared as a reflexologist works on that point of their foot. You could also try mixing dried herbs together to make a soothing tea: -Elderflower is a great decongestant -Eyebright can help irritated eyes -Nettle is a natural anti-histamine Due to increasing life expectancy, women are now spending one third of their life in the menopausal stage, so are looking for alternative ways to help ease the menopause. Reflexology is a therapy that can help to control the difficulties of menopause, and a scientific study showed a significant reduction of sleep disorder after carrying out a reflexology experiment on a group of women. You can read about this study here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1877042811029788
In reflexology for menopause I work on many important points, some of which can even help with hot flushes. Book a session now to find out more about how reflexology can help you with your menopause. The heating is being turned on in the treatment room, cosy blankets are coming out of the cupboards, and the candles are being lit for evening treatments! What nicer way to spend an evening after a long day at work, than having a relaxing treatment in my studio. Come for some reflexology, to help reduce stress, anxiety, depression, calm the body and the mind. A natural facelift massage treatment is also a wonderful way to end the day, a truly pampering paradise!
We hear about, talk about, and see stress in the workplace on a day to day basis. So why aren't we doing something about it?
Statistics show that "the total number of cases of work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2013/14 was 487 000 (39%) out of a total of 1 241 000 cases for all work-related illnesses." What's more, "the total number of working days lost due to stress, depression or anxiety was 11.3 million in 2013/14, an average of 23 days per case of stress, depression or anxiety" (Quotations from: http://www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/causdis/stress/index.htm) Treatments such as Reflexology and head massage help to reduce stress and therefore prevent illness. For other advice on how to cope with stress in the workplace go to: http://www.mind.org.uk/for-business/mental-health-at-work/ It's that time in the year again, where everyone is talking about "Detoxing", so I thought I'd join in and give my input!
Firstly what are the reasons we detox? + To feel better: detoxing puts the body back in to Homeostasis (a balance of all our bodily systems) + To cleanse the body of toxins: toxins can build up in the body and detoxing helps to reduce these toxins. + To increase energy: detoxing can increase energy levels and stop you feeling so sluggish. These are a few amongst many of the benefits of detoxing. So how can Reflexology help? Reflexology has been proven to be very good at getting rid of built up toxins in the body. It does this by increasing circulatory and lymphatic movement on a very physical level. In reflexology we look for "Crystals" in parts of the feet, which are a build up of toxins. We then massage these back into the bloodstream to then be flushed through the body through the excretory system. To aid the excretory system in getting rid of these waste toxins, you must drink plenty of water! Reflexology also works to balance the endocrine system, and especially the adrenal gland. Over the festive period the adrenal gland produces lots of hormones and works overtime to get us through the wonderful- although slightly stressful time! Balancing the adrenal gland can help you to feel much better, and less stressed. Reflexology can also help to improve sleep- something which we all have a lack of during the festive period! It works to balance the Pineal gland which regulates and controls your sleep patterns, and in doing so helps you get a better nights rest. Reflexology can also provide that well needed relaxation, from which the body benefits hugely! When the body relaxes, all the bodily systems work much better, and our body can work to reach homeostasis. So include reflexology in your detox plan and see how much better it makes you feel! bones in your body are in your feet. There are 20 muscles in each foot. The soles of the feet have more than 7000 nerve endings in them..." |
